I use six different clays and a range of glazes, aiming to make functional domestic objects which are intriguing to view and pleasing to hold.

Elaine Henderson

While training in Ceramic Design at Glasgow School of Art, being the last student in Scotland to graduate with a specialist degree in clay, Elaine established her first pottery in the magnetic archipelago of Orkney in 2010. She converted the garage of her 200 year old house in Stromness into a studio and gallery; lapped or lashed by the Scapa Flow, depending on the season or time of day, she observed a basking shark from her studio window, passing families of Eider ducks, murmurations of starlings, the local youth jumping off the old pier. A few miles away were neolithic ruins and Viking runes, mysterious monoliths and eroded sea cliffs. Despite now living in Hawick, equidistant from the sea as can be, she keeps this connection with weather and the rhythms of darkness and light through sky gazing, rock dreaming and scanning the contours of the rolling Border hills.
She keeps her feet on the ground by being a new grandma.
