Through my enjoyment of hill walking my love of the Borders landscape developed and further inspiration came from my many visits to the West Highlands and the Isle of Skye. Until early 2018 my primary passion had been the interpretation of this beautiful landscape through the tactile medium of pastel and I continue to investigate the expressive boundaries of this medium.
In early 2018 I discovered the freedom of expression and the challenges of the medium of alcohol ink. I find this a liberating and exciting medium particularly when painting on ceramic tiles which allow the ink to flow unrestricted. Initially, I allowed the inks to flow with very little interference, enjoying the vibrant colours, developing colour combinations and an understanding of how to subtly affect the final image, discovering when to continue influencing the colours and the image and when to leave alone. I then moved on to more directly influencing the final image, producing mini landscapes and identifiable images. I like to challenge the imagination so many of my alcohol ink works contain images that are not always obvious. I have been pleased to discover that my alcohol ink works have captured the interest of many people and are exhibited in a number of galleries throughout the Scottish Borders.
I now work in both the medium of pastel and of alcohol ink and continue to develop both. I offer workshops in both mediums and also one-to-one tuition in my home studio.
