Born and educated in Edinburgh Iain has painted or drawn for as long as he can remember. Although he has had a busy career in the NHS he still found time to paint, tutor, exhibit and sell his watercolours regularly in Lincolnshire and Scotland. He left the NHS in 2008 to follow his ‘second career’ and has now returned to live and paint in the Borders. He is largely self-taught but has been inspired by a number of short courses and from his own study of many of the watercolour ‘Masters’, both old and current.
Iain’s first love is watercolour and paints in his studio using painted and drawn sketches and photos. Memory and the emotional response to landscapes and flowers are also an essential part of his approach to painting. “I want to communicate to the viewer some of my emotional response to the scene, whether it be the awe and wonder of the Grand Canyon or the windblown nature of the Scottish coast. I am always drawn to the constantly changing interplay of light, colour and shadow and the challenge of capturing something of that in the watercolours.”
