I’ve been painting with pastels for over 20 years – they are so convenient and versatile. I prefer to work from life but very often use photos as I tend to be miles from the car.

I trained as an art teacher in York, and have taught High School in England, and for 13 years in the Borders as a Primary Art Specialist, as well as a number of workshops to adult groups.

I’ve been painting with pastels for over 20 years – they are so convenient (no preparation, no washing up!) and so versatile, and I enjoy them so much. I have occasional forays into using acrylics or oils but have so far always drifted back to the pastels.

Having been a keen walker and lover of the countryside I’m naturally drawn to landscapes and seascapes; the Borders and North Northumberland are so beautiful and varied that I tend to be mostly inspired by this area though I’ve produced a number of pieces based on the Highlands and abroad. I’m fascinated by the effects of light moving over the land and water and the rapidly-changing colours and shadows and attempt to capture them when I can, and to produce an atmosphere, maybe of calm or of energy.
