My business Fiona Luing Jewellery was set up in 2006 in the Peebles in the Borders. I wanted to turn my jewellery making hobby my main occupation, so while taking night classes at Edinburgh College of Art, I set up the business with the help of Scottish Enterprise. Over the years I have studied lots of different jewellery techniques, and have found that I gravitate toward surface texturing and stone setting.
I generally work in gold, recycled silver and gemstones. I am really pleased to have recently become a registered Fairtrade Gold Licensee, as this means I can offer my customers a more ethical choice of metals. I hope that by taking more care with the materials that I source and offer to the public, this might encourage people to ask more questions about the origins of the products that they buy.
My designs are developed first through drawing, then by exploring directly in metal whether my sketched shape will work within a piece of jewellery. I find it fascinating how once constructed in a piece of silver, a shape comes to life and presents countless options to improve and develop.
