My business Fiona Luing Jewellery was set up in 2006 in Peebles in the Borders. I wanted to turn my jewellery making hobby into my full-time job, so while taking night classes at Edinburgh College of Art, I set up the business with the help of Scottish Enterprise. Over the years I have studied lots of different jewellery techniques, and have found that I gravitate toward surface texturing and stone setting.
Since becoming a registered Fairtrade Gold Licensee I have launched a new brand called Luing Smith. Everything I make under this name is made from recycled silver, Fairtrade gold and responsibly sourced gemstones. I hope that by taking more care with the materials that I source and offer to the public, this might encourage them to ask more questions about the origins of the products that they buy in general.
My designs are developed first through drawing, then by exploring directly in metal whether my sketched shape will work within a piece of jewellery. I find it fascinating how once constructed in a piece of silver, a shape comes to life and presents countless options to improve and develop.
I'm so happy to be back at Art at Ancrum for 2022 - It's my favourite event to take part in and I can't wait to see all of the regular exhibitors and customers again!
