Never formally trained, Deryck began his career as a figurative artist working in batik and exhibiting work throughout Europe and the USA, up until 1978. Having children meant he needed to find a steady income and so he started designing for a textile company in 1978. Deryck was their senior designer for 11 years working with people such as Roger Hargreaves, Zandra Rhodes, Alan Aldrich and Kaffe Fasset to name a few. During this time he worked directly with the author Michael Bond to create a range of Paddington Bear illustrations which were used for a line of Paddington products launched in January 1980, from tea cosies to children's bags and aprons.

Deryck started his own design/manufacturing company 'Flights of Fancy' along with his wife in 1989, creating educational gifts. They ran it for 27 years selling their products worldwide. Deryck has since returned to his love of figurative drawing and runs life drawing classes in the Scottish Borders.
